Good Bye, my friend…

September 23, 2006

… I’ll miss you very much!

My very good friend Sharon died September 12, 2006. I got the notice a couple of days ago. We spoke nearly every day for the 14 months after she found out that she was ill, the last time on September 8th.

We hadn’t seen each other for several years. Sharon lived in California, I live in BC. But our friendship was such that it didn’t matter. We adopted each other as sisters. She became the sister I never had, and I became hers. And, just like sisters, we squabbled sometimes. But we liked the same things, had the same values, loved the same poem. Went shopping at Nordstrom’s. Discussed God and the world and were each other’s sounding board.

It’s another good-bye, sis. And it’s too soon!

“After a While”

After a while you learn
the subtle difference betweenholding a hand and chaining a soul
and you learn
that love doesn’t mean leaning
and company doesn’t always mean security.
And you begin to learn
that kisses aren’t contracts
and presents aren’t promises
and you begin to accept your defeats
with your head up and your eyes ahead
with the grace of woman, not the grief of a child
and you learn
to build all your roads on today
because tomorrow’s ground is
too uncertain for plans
and futures have a way of falling down
in mid-flight.
After a while you learn
that even sunshine burns
if you get too much
so you plant your own garden
and decorate your own soul
instead of waiting for someone
to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure
you really are strong
you really do have worth
and you learnand you learn
with every goodbye, you learn…

I don’t think I could have stood another bloody hot day in Paradise… 🙂
