Good bye Gerri

April 5, 2011

On Tuesday, March 22 at 3:30 am, Gerri shed her earthly body and soared into the spiritual realm. She is with God. I can see her shining face in my mind’s eyes, she is happy and content to be home.

Her journey in the last 3 months of her life is written in a blog I set up for her friends who live all over the world, so that they could follow how she was doing and leave comments for her. I also took over her email correspondence. You’ll get a glimpse of the very unusual woman Gerri was by reading the posts on her blog, although there is no way that the essence of this woman can be captured in a few words on a few posts. Every week I would bring Gerri printouts of the more important emails, boot up her computer and show her the posts and comments.

Why not use facebook, or twitter? Too much, too inane, too instantly public, too open to abuse, too hectic, too undignified. A blog has a web address that is not instantly pushed on people, it takes weeks until it becomes indexed on search engines, so unless you know what to search for it remains relatively anonymous, perfect.

I can’t imagine what it would have been like for Gerri in her last weeks if the technology were not there to instantly communicate like that and keep her friends informed. There would have been no peace. The phone would have rung off the hook, flower and other deliveries would have poured in from well-meaning friends (no room to put anything), cards, tons of cards would have piled up, people would have dropped in perhaps with food. No rest, no privacy, no peace, no stillness to think.

Gerri asked to be transferred to the hospital for her last three days, she needed to be alone. I found out later that she needed stillness to think.

Weirdness… My brown thumb…

February 17, 2011

… suddenly turns green!
My sink is growing
My sink is sprouting. I’ve watched this sprout hang on and grow, while using the bathroom sink as usual. The thing keeps growing despite hot water, tooth paste, mouth wash and soap swirling around it. Seems that the seeds that are on my bagels are not genetically modified, they procreate.
